Groupthink In Human Resources - One of the most worrisome things that can come into your human resources department is groupthink. It is most likely to come into play in a human resource department due to the fact that it involves people trying to work together quite often. However, groupthink in human resources can result in major mistakes being made and rarely does anything good. In fact, there have been studies done in order to determine what groupthink is and why it tends to happen whenever there are large groups of people together trying to make a decision.
One reason that groupthink in human resources tends to happen is that people are usually trying to get a unanimous decision when they’re working together in groups. As a result, the tendency will be toward trying to find a “happy medium” of sorts, or a compromise. A lot of people, wanting to get to a consensus will go along with things that they don’t believe in, in order to make sure that everybody ends up happy. This compromise is often why we get a lot of decisions from groups that don’t seem to make any sense. People who are engaging in groupthink will often just go along with the bad decisions instead of standing up and pointing out why those decisions were wrong.
If you think that groupthink in human resources is something that’s having a negative effect on your company, you should look into getting people together in order to explain what groupthink is, why it’s bad, and how to avoid it. Luckily, it can be avoided if people are told how to figure out that it’s happening before it’s too late and an erroneous decision has been made.
One of the most important things to consider as far as avoiding groupthink in human resources is that people often function at their best if they’re allowed to make their own decisions and think things through on their own. Therefore, companies that want to avoid groupthink should encourage their employees to think things out for themselves, no matter how many other people have come to a conclusion already.
